Chinese New Year Cultural Experience for International Students at Leshan Vocational and Technical College

Time:2022-01-30

As the Year of the Tiger approached, Leshan Vocational and Technical College organized a unique cultural experience for international students. The event, held in the folk - style Zhongshun Street, aimed to immerse students in the local Spring Festival atmosphere and encourage them to actively participate in telling "Chinese stories" and experiencing Jiaozuo's  vibrant life.

Vice President Bao Xuedong conveyed the college leaders' warm greetings to the students. He hoped that through this event, students would gain a deeper understanding of China and Leshan. He encouraged them to value their study experience at Leshan Vocational and Technical College during the pandemic, motivating themselves to continue their studies, complete their education, and contribute to their home countries after returning home.

At the beginning of the event, under the guidance of teachers, the international students learned about the history of Han - style clothing and then put on the traditional attire, mastering the correct gesture for the traditional Chinese greeting of "yi" (a form of respectful salutation).

Jianjiang ancient paper - making, a national - level intangible cultural heritage, was introduced to the students by the teachers. The students rolled up their sleeves and engaged in the processes of pulping, pounding, drying, and lifting the paper. After completing a simplified paper - making procedure, they each had a sheet of paper they had made themselves, gaining an appreciation for the wisdom and craftsmanship of ancient Chinese people.

Jianjiang woodblock New Year paintings, another national - level intangible cultural heritage, were experienced by the students. After the teacher explained the basic techniques of printing New Year paintings, the students carefully and diligently followed the instructions. Through the printing technique, each student obtained a New Year painting with auspicious meanings for the Year of the Tiger.

Finally, ingredients for dumplings, which represent the northern Chinese way of celebrating the New Year, and glutinous rice balls (tangyuan), which represent the southern way, were brought to the table. Under the guidance of the teachers, the students learned to make dumplings and glutinous rice balls. As they enjoyed the steaming hot tangyuan and dumplings they had made themselves and received red envelopes symbolizing New Year blessings, the atmosphere was extremely lively, filled with laughter and joy. They truly experienced the "flavor of the Chinese New Year"!

Leshan Vocational and Technical College used the Spring Festival experience activity as an opportunity to integrate traditional cultural education into the daily teaching and comprehensive quality development of international students. Based on cultural confidence and telling good Leshan stories, the college led the students to experience the Chinese New Year and feel the Chinese sentiment. This event not only allowed the international students, who are far from home, to feel the strong Spring Festival atmosphere but also enhanced their identification with and love for the college and Leshan. It deepened their understanding and perception of Chinese culture.
