[Roots - Seeking Journey] Day Five in Leshan: Bonding with "Golden Nan" and Paying Homage at the Confucius Temple

Time:2019-08-07

On August 7, the fifth day of the 2019 "China Roots - Seeking Journey" Summer Camp in Leshan, Sichuan, the Chinese - descendant teenagers set off for Jianwei, an ancient district, at 9 a.m. under the guidance of their teachers.

At 10:30 a.m., the participants arrived at the Golden Nan Valley Eco - Garden in Shoubao Township, Jianwei County, to plant trees in the "Roots - Seeking Forest." With affection, they planted golden nan saplings and hung nameplates with their names on them, leaving a beautiful memory for this journey.

At 2 p.m., they arrived at the second destination of the day—the Jianwei Confucius Temple. Despite the scorching sun, the children were immediately attracted by the ancient and tranquil atmosphere as soon as they entered the temple. They divided into groups and, under the guidance and explanation of the staff, further learned about the history and culture of the temple and the etiquette of worship. In front of a big drum inscribed with "Top - Ranking in the Imperial Exams," the children experienced hitting the drum with their hands. The drum's sound echoed continuously.

In the Dacheng Hall, the participants paid homage to the statue of Confucius and worshipped the sages with reverence.

Wulan, principal of the Spanish Wulan Education Group, and her daughter Xijier, dressed in traditional Han clothing, personally experienced the coming - of - age ceremony held in front of the temple hall and felt the Confucian culture.

As an important part of the "2019 China Roots - Seeking Journey" Summer Camp in Leshan, Sichuan, the coming - of - age ceremony followed the ancient system, with hand - washing, incense - burning, and wine - pouring. With the support of the master of ceremonies and the crisp and melodious music, Wulan presented a hairpin to her daughter Xijier and performed the coming - of - age ritual for her.

"As a Chinese - descendant, I feel very proud and meaningful to participate in the coming - of - age ceremony in traditional Han clothing today and experience Confucian culture up close. I will strive to be a useful person to society in the future," said Xijier.

Jianwei Confucius Temple was first built in the Northern Song Dynasty and rebuilt in the fourth year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty. It has a history of more than 600 years and has experienced "three relocations and three reconstructions." Among the existing Confucius temples in China, it ranks fourth in scale nationwide and first in Sichuan. In 2006, it was listed as a key national cultural relic protection unit of the sixth batch.
